Good to know before you begin

Image-based compression removes searchable text, links, forms and accessibility structure. Optimize does not downsample embedded pictures. Neither mode guarantees a reduction; if the output is larger, we offer your original instead.

How to compress a PDF

  1. Choose a PDF and a compression mode.
  2. Use Optimize to keep page content, or Image-based for scans.
  3. Review the size comparison and download the smaller result.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my file not get smaller?

Some PDFs are already well compressed. A short text document can be smaller than an image of the same page. We keep the original when our output would be larger.

Can I keep selectable text?

Choose Optimize. Image-based mode turns each page into a picture and removes text selection.
